Where are Glinda's shoes from in the Wicked film?
Ruby Shoo. The shoes on Glinda's shelves are all by British shoe brand Ruby Shoo
Maybe we were manifesting when we dreamed up the concept of a vintage inspired footwear brand back in 2010 and named it Ruby Shoo!
Why 'Ruby Shoo'? Red has connotations of being striking and being seen, of 1940's starlets such as Greta Garbo, Rita Hayward and Marilyn Monroe... and our early collections were proudly named after these movie stars, with a (Judy) Garland in our second season! Ruby Shoo also gives more than a nod to the iconic Ruby Slippers that Dorothy wore in The Wizard of Oz- probably the most famous shoes of all time. And of course we named a shoe Dorothy all the way back in 2013.
I certainly don't think we dare dreamed that one day we would be appearing in the prequel to that Wizard of Oz Movie that partly inspired our name! In Wicked the red sequinned slippers (which mainly seem to have been chosen to pop on the new technicolour screens) have been replaced with the silver shoes from Frank Baum's original books of the stories of Oz. For those who have rusty memories of the shoes significance, they did belong to the Wicked Witch of the East, but when Dorothy's farmhouse lands on the Wicked Witch and kills her, the Good Witch of the North explains that the slippers now belong to Dorothy. The silver slippers are worn throughout the whole book and have some pretty major symbolic significance.

Dorothy's shoes give her the means to get home to Kansas, but it is only with real belief and confidence that their power could be activated. Just like the other characters in the book, Dorothy had to realise that she always had the thing that she longed for all along, that she just had to believe Here at Ruby Shoo we always knew that a great pair of shoes unleashes a certain power, a certain confidence that supersedes 'nice shoes'. They make us feel elevated, strong and confident. We hope that it is this that made us stand out to the costume designers at Wicked and that this is why we were chosen for Glinda's wardrobe.
The silver shoes for Glinda work perfectly with the pink and pastel palette chosen and a selection of our shoes appear in Glinda's wardrobe. The 'technicolour' that was so exciting when the Wizard of Oz was released in 1939 is certainly a novelty no more and the pink pastel is perfectly designed to contrast with Elphaba's more sultry and moody aesthetic.
Ruby Shoo was conceived in 2010 under the direction of Samantha Lines, a graduate from the prestigious Cordwainers College at the University of the Arts, London. Samantha takes a unique approach to footwear, abstaining from trends to focus on timeless pieces with a unique twist and a hint of whimsy. It is an independent, woman owned, British brand with a mantra of 'be bold, be different, be you'. Under the leadership of Deborah Swanwick Baker Ruby Shoo has been featured in Grazia Magazine as a key footwear brand for vintage inspired shoes.
